Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Emotional Support Animal?
An emotional support animal (ESA) is a pet that provides support to a person who suffers from symptoms of a emotional or mental disability such as post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and more. Unlike a service animal, an emotional support animal is not granted access to public places. An ESA is an animal that is not specifically trained to perform tasks for a person who suffers from emotional disabilities. Under the federal Fair Housing Act (FHA), an emotional support animal is viewed as a “reasonable accommodation” in a housing unit that has a “no pets” rule for its residents.
How to get an Emotional Support Animal?
In order to qualify for an emotional support animal, you need a letter from a licensed medical healthcare professional that outlines your need for the animal. Getting an emotional support animal letter used to be tedious but GetEsa has streamlined the entire process. Moreover, GetEsa is the only HIPPA Compliant website that can give you a verifiable ESA letter.
What kind of Licensed Mental Health Professional will sign my letter?
Our LMHPs consist of Licensed Medical Doctors and Licensed Mental Health Counselors. All of our Licensed Mental Health Professionals are fully qualified and have passed board exams. The LMHP we select will be one that is legally qualified to approve ESA Letters for your state.
Does the ESA Letter expire? How often do I need to renew?
Your ESA Letter will last for one year. You will then have the opportunity to renew your ESA Letter with GetEsa at a discounted rate.
Will I need additional forms besides the letter?
No. Your ESA Letter covers all the legal requirements. Occasionally, custom forms are required. Please note that airlines such as Delta and Alaska Airlines have started requiring more forms in order to fly with your ESA. If a custom form is required, then you can request one from your therapist.
How will my landlord or property manager be able to verify my letter?
Your landlord or property manager can verify your letter by calling the verification number that is included on the physician’s letterhead 24/7. This is the verification phone number of the doctor that issued your prescription.
Can I get a letter for more than one ESA?
It is extremely rare that a therapist agrees to approve more than one ESA. This is mostly due to the fact that it is extremely difficult to justify more than one animal being clinically necessary. Additionally, airline companies and housing authorities make it very difficult to accept more than one ESA. With that said, therapists are willing to consider a second ESA on a case-by-case basis. If approved for a first ESA, a client then has the ability to request a clinical review for a second animal.
What animals could be Emotional Support Animals?
There are no legal restrictions the type of animals that can be utilised as companion animals, however emotional support animals are typically emotional support cats and emotional support dogs. Please note that there are airline restrictions on what type of animals you can bring on board.
What are the benefits of having an emotional support animal?
As an owner of an Emotional Support Animal, you can enjoy two legal benefits: You can fly on a plane with your ESA regardless of breed or weight restrictions at no additional cost but please keep in mind that airline companies have their own policy of what type of animals you can bring on board. Cats and dogs are mostly accepted. You can also reside in housing that usually requires pet rent or deposits for pet owners, regardless of pet policy at no additional cost.
How long does the approval process take?
Once approved, you will receive a digital copy of your emotional support animal letter immediately. The original document will be sent via USPS on same day.
